Google Making New Messaging App To Challenge Facebook And WhatsApp, Powered by AI

Google messaging app

Google came out with a blast when it launched Google plus with hangouts features. Initial spikes in the liking because of generated interests by the people slacked down and Google hangouts was labeled as a failure. To keep the hangouts and Google Plus alive, Google integrated Google Plus with SEO. Well, that was very strategic but still, Google chat option saw a doomed future.
One of the basic problems of hangouts was its association with Google plus. Google eventually separated Hangouts and made it a standalone app. The company even went an extra mile by allowing users to send Hangout invites to those without Google account. But these scenes came much later in the picture when the fate was already decided.
Even though Google tried to bring everything – phone calls, SMS, messaging and video conferencing – in one place on Hangouts, it really did not work well to attract audiences that seemed more inclined towards WhatsApp, WeChat and others.
According to recent figures, around 900 million people are now using WhatsApp. WhatsApp was bought by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014, and another 700 million people use the Messenger service that Facebook developed internally.  That means around 1.6 billion people are using Facebook Services to exchange messages which is a massive figure- the market Google is missing.

Google’s New Messaging App:

Google’s new Messaging app would be capable of doing almost everything that a normal Google search can, such as offering up answers and providing links to web pages etc. It will leverage on Google’s artificial intelligence technology to offers chatbots that will message like a real person. Users can ask questions related to weather, news, and images and the chatbots will respond.
Even though Google has been pushing up the ‘Google Now‘ feature everywhere, it knows how critical a chatting app is for users.
What do you think Google’s new messaging app based on intelligent chatbots will be successful?

Google CEO Is Considering India His Biggest Playground, Here’s Why

google-for-india-sundar-pichai

I was in 4th standard when I typed Google.com on my new desktop for the first time. I can still recollect those moments only to feel nostalgic about the long journey I’ve covered with Google. It has helped me at every stage of my digital life, whether it was the first email I sent, or my first glance at a YouTube video. Its awesomeness still amazes me – how Google knows what I’m about to type in the search box – truly fascinating!
Google, an Alphabet company now, has its presence in India since almost a decade and now it wants to express more of its love towards the country. In the keynote “Google for India”, hosted by Google’s new boss Sundar Pichai, he revealed his plans to expand Google’s operations in India in the coming years.
We’ve already seen Google’s efforts since a couple of years, they’ve rolled out services like YouTube Offline, Offline feature in Maps, streamlined Search, etc. to provide an uninterrupted internet experience in India’s underdeveloped internet infrastructure.
Pichai, a Chennai-born metallurgical engineer and Stanford graduate, is on his first India visit after since he was appointed as Google’s CEO, following 11 years of his contribution. He is the man behind the management of Google’s world famous products like Chrome, Android, Chrome OS, Maps, and many more.
In the keynote, Pichai focused on his plans to make Google more “Indian”, with apps and products specifically developed for India. He wants to bypass the linguistic diversity that exists in the nation. The fact, Android’s latest Indic keyboard now supports 11 Indian languages, signifies his viewpoint.

From the Google for India Keynote

WiFi at Railway Stations

A few months back, Google announced its intentions to provide WiFi services at 400 railway stations across India, a boon for the passengers during their connection time. Pichai mentioned they’ve been successful in running a pilot at the Mumbai Central railway station and Wi-Fi services will start by the end of January 2016. The project is in compliance with the government of India’s Digital India Campaign which was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. Pichai committed inclusion of 100 railway stations under the project by the end of 2016.

The Internet for Women

Pichai explained Google’s plans to help rural women get online and learn how to use the internet, estimated to complete within a span of three years. The rural internet program, which is currently on a pilot run, will become full-fledged to include 300,000 villages.
In India there is a common belief, if you educate a woman, you educate a whole family. For that purpose, Google has already launched their Helping Women Get Online initiative, featuring information about using basic computer functions. The HWGO website helps women learn how to send emails, watch videos and eventually, become an internet pro.
If we have a look at the stats in the IAMAI report, the rural internet is mostly dominated by males who account for 88% of the total rural users. In terms of individual growth rate, the ladies have shown a commendable 61% increase, considering the opportunity and availability of internet-connected devices. The gentlemen are also doing well with a 71% growth rate. Mostly, the population aged between 18 to 30 years is very interested in using the internet in rural areas, contributing to 75% of the total internet population in these areas.

Custom Apps for India

Pichai also focused on the need to create India-centric products and apps which will benefit the users and the company. He quoted the example, how the YouTube Offline feature created for India was praised all around the world.
Google is working on enhancing Chrome to something more than just a web browser, a platform that can be used to code memory-efficient web applications for low-end smartphones, Flipkart Lite is one such application.

New Office, more Jobs, and cash inflow

Google will have a new campus in Hyderabad with all the perks, kitchens, and cool spaceships they have at Mountain View. Also, Google in partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation of India will launch an Android training program for around 2 million developers, so as to give them an idea about coding apps for Android.
They also have some good news for the engineers, as they’ll be hiring more of them at their Bangalore and Hyderabad locations.
Google Capital, venture wing of the company, will invest a serious amount of cash over the next few years to propel the realization of Google’s myriad ambitions. A $20 million investment will be utilized to fund various start-ups, with a $20,000 limit per start-up.
It makes a lot of sense to invest in India as what we build here will have global usage.
– said Pichai.
If we observe the recent trend, the internet penetration in India has been stellar. Referring to the stats, by the end of this year, India will surpass the US in terms of the internet population. According to a report published by the Internet and Mobile Association of India, there will be an online population of 402 million by December 2015.
India’s online population grew from 300 million to 400 million in a span of one year. The report says, 71% of the online population is contributed by the gentlemen while it is 29% for the ladies. The male growth rate is 54% while the female online population has been growing at the rate of 46%, a nice figure indeed. The major rise in the internet adaptation is contributed by the availability of low-cost smartphones from various companies like Micromax, Motorola, YU, etc.
“India is one of the largest growth markets for the search giant Google globally,” said Sundar Pichai, while he was delivering the keynote in Delhi. Currently, with a population of about 1.2 billion, India serves as one of the largest potential markets for tech titans like Facebook, Microsoft, and Google. We’ve already witnessed their escalating interest in the past few months. Facebook’s Zuckerburg, Microsoft’s Nadella and finally Google’s Pichai – all these big names have invested their efforts in popularizing their services in India.
Although, great efforts are being imparted by these MNCs in order to harness their interests from the huge potential underlying the Indian soil, but it should be noted that a large part of the population is contributed by rural areas. And the biggest challenge is to motivate that population, which currently focuses on conventional methods only, and they have their rigid belief and reluctance to adopt new technological trends, provided the reason, they find no use of it.
Google also wants to bring its much-sensationalized internet balloons to India. Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s Wednesday meeting, on his current India visit, with the Telecommunications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, saw a blue-fruited outcome when Indian government gave an in-principle nod to the Google’s project Loon.
Google’s project Loon is an R&D project with a mission of furnishing internet access to rural and remote areas. Balloons are placed at an altitude of about 18 KMs above the earth surface and can be controlled wirelessly. This network of balloons acts as an aerial wireless network with up to 4G-LTE speeds covering a diameter of around 40 KMs over the ground. Such projects can prove to be of great benefit in Indian space, where the internet is monopolized by telecom operators who provide below average services and only want to use their customers as a money machine.

Pichai concluded with the following lines:

I just want to say, thank you. This country has given me and Google so much; I hope we can give much more in return to India in the months and years ahead.
Clearly, the Indian digital space is on the verge of a big transformation that is more of a necessity than an opportunity as one would presume. Google’s enhanced focus and immense interest in the Indian market is well invigorated by the fact that Google has been unable to find its presence in China, after the communist government reportedly kicked out Google from the Chinese market. But whatever it may be, delights are for the Indian citizenry, with loads of apps and services designed specifically for their nation.
And the CEO said,
Google is barely getting started in India.

This smartphone packs a 10-day battery

Oukitel's latest smartphone has a 10,000mAh power pack that reportedly lasts all week, and then some.

Forget picking up a gigantic USB battery, or shoving your phone into an equally bulky battery case -- if Oukitel has its way, your phone will have the juice you need for days on end. Its upcoming K10000 smartphone has a whopping 10,000mAh battery that, under "normal" use, reportedly lasts for 10 to 15 days per charge. If this isn't just marketing fluff, you could go on a week-long vacation and still have enough energy to upload your photos before plugging in. And like some high-capacity phones, you can use any excess electricity to top up other devices.
If you read this and thought "there has to be a catch..." well, your suspicions are well-founded. The K10000's performance is quite modest, to put it mildly. You're looking at a quad-core 1GHz MediaTek processor, 720p (if 5.5-inch) screen, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front cam and 16GB of expandable storage. Also, don't be surprised if the 3G and LTE don't work in your corner of the globe. Think of this more as an enormous battery with a phone attached than anything else. Even so, that $240 pre-order price (it ships on January 21st) might be hard to resist if you're looking for a smartphone that will keep running through that next camping trip.

Red launches the Scarlet-W, an entry-level 5K video camera

Shooting a film or commercial with the same high-end equipment as a Peter Jackson or David Fincher just got cheaper. Red just revealed the $9,950 Scarlet-W and Scarlet-W Monochrome, cameras that shoot 5K RAW video and 2K ProRes with the company's Dragon sensor. For slo-mo, the 3.5-pound camera can handle 60 fps in 5K widescreen, 150 fps at 4K, and 300 fps at 2K resolutions. The model sits between the high-end $29,000 6K Epic model and the recently launched $5,950 Raven. Red's Jared Land told No Film School that the Raven is intended for drone or gimbal work, while the Scarlet-W is an entry-level main camera. "All of our [latest] cameras have the Dragon sensor in common, so intercutting footage between the entire line is pretty seamless." Unlike past models, previous Scarlet cameras can't be upgraded to the Scarlet-W, which puts a dent in the company's "obsolescence obsolete" mantra. However, owners of the last Scarlet Dragon model will get a $2,500 reduction on the entry-level shooting package with a Canon mount (Nikon is also available), paying $12,000 instead of the regular $14,500 price -- and will still get to keep the old one. The price should make it a hit with indie producers and rental houses, though Arri's Alexa and other models are arguably much more popular in mainstream films. Meanwhile, directors like Tarantino and Nolan still prefer to shoot on celluloid.

Diamond is no longer the strongest form of carbon after this new discovery

Diamonds are widely known to be the hardest form of carbon. This idea is about to change as researchers discovered a new form of carbon structure that is not only stronger, but it even shines brighter and more brilliantly than diamond itself. It is called Q-carbon and it also has ability to glow even in the lowest of light making it possible for developing new electronic display technology.
A team of material scientists from North Carolina are the brains behind this discovery. The Q-carbon is only made in a lab, so we can think of it as an artificial form of diamond.
close-up of diamond

The only place it may be found in the natural world would be possibly in the core of some planets,” the scientists explain in a press release
The Q-carbon is created by taking a surface like glass and coating it with amorphous form of carbon. After this is done, a laser is fired at the carbon at the rate of 5 million times per second, which causes the temperature to rise very fast to an impressive 3,727º Celsius. The carbon is cooled afterwards. The idea behind this is that by changing the rate at which the laser heats and cools the carbon, diamond structures can be created at room temperature and pressure with relative ease.
Although the Q-carbon might also be potentially used as a jewel, it looks more promising to apply it in the field of medical research because of its ferromagnetic characteristics.
diamond zoomedAn electron microscope image of the diamonds made using the technique described by the researchers
“We can create diamond Nano needles or micro needles, Nano dots or large-area diamond films, with applications for drug delivery,” the research leader, Jay Narayan, said.
This discovery is indeed impressive, however, it looks like it will take a while before the Q-carbon can be be fully ready for commercial application. The team can so far only produce sheets if the material used to produce the Q-carbon is 20 nanometers to 500 nanometers thick, about 100 times thinner than the width of a typical human hair.

Samsung Agrees To Pay Apple $548 Million For Copying iPhone Designs

According to the latest report from AppleInsider, Samsung has finally agreed to pay Apple $548,176,477 after they lost the famous iPhone-Galaxy patent dispute. The Korean company was sued by Apple in 2012 for infringing smartphone patents by copying the iPhone design.
samsung-apple-patent-google-facebook
Back then, Apple took the route of courts and asked for $2.5 billion in damages and was awarded about $1 billion. In the further proceedings, the amount was whittled down to $930 million and ultimately $548 million.
Notably, Samsung’s earliest Galaxy phones looked a lot like iPhones and it fueled this court case. Later, Samsung made its lineup more diverse and it’s latest flagship Galaxy S6 Edge is an example of a radical redesign.
Samsung has confirmed that if Apple sends an invoice before this weekend, it’ll pay Apple $548 million before December 14th, according to the local Korea time.
Well, the story doesn’t end here. If the judgement is reversed at the later stage, Samsung reserves the right to reimburse the payments. The further damages in the Apple vs. Samsung case will be decided later in 2016.

After 20 Years, Adobe Has Just Killed The Flash Name

It’s very hard to remember a time when Flash was good enough to earn a respectable place on the web. Back in the day, Adobe Flash made the internet a fun place with games, animation, apps, and graphics. But, as Steve Jobs predicted about five years ago, these are the last days of Flash.
flash-dead
Now, Adobe has decided to rebrand its Flash Professional CC as Adobe Animate CC. If you are still not convinced, read this statement by Adobe in its blog: “Animate CC will be Adobe’s premier Web animation tool for developing HTML5 content.”
Accepting Flash’s defeat, in its blog post, Adobe said that more than over a third of all content made in Flash Professional today uses HTML5. However, the Animate CC app will still support Flash output and other animation and video format.
Adobe writes in the blog post, “when the release becomes available in January, it will be listed as “Adobe Animate CC” in the Creative Cloud desktop application. When you install or update Animate CC, it will be found on your computer as Adobe Animate CC 2015, not Adobe Flash CC 2015.”
Over the past few years, HTML5 and open web standards have become dominant. On the other hand, Flash has been on the receiving end due to its numerous zero-day flaws and other security loopholes.

Father of Android Plans To Start His Own Smartphone Company

Andy Rubin founded Android before it became one of the most known products of Google. According to the sources close to the situation, Andy Rubin, the father of Google’s Android phone operating system, is planning to get back in the Android game.father-of-android-new-company
After being away from Android for more than two years, he is planning to start his own phone company. The Information reports that Mr. Rubin has recently tried to hire people to help start a new smartphone company.
Andy Rubin shares an interesting relationship with Google. In the year 2013, he left the Android division of Google to work in Google’s robotic department. Next year, he left Google completely to start his own incubator Playground Global. Currently, he is running his venture capital firm Playground Ventures with $300 million in funding. He’ll be starting this Android phone company via Playground Fund, his own tech startup incubator Playground Global.
If we believe the reports, he might bring something special to the family of Android handsets. In the past, he has mentioned that Android is his baby and he is not leaving it behind forever.
When he left Google few years back, Android ecosystem was an entirely different category. Now it features tons of major players like Samsung, Xiaomi, HTC, Motorola, Lenovo, Asus, Micromax etc. So, it would be interesting to notice Rubin’s strategy as Android is already an overcrowded category with low-profit margins.

You can modify your iPhone's logo so it glows like the one on your MacBook

Did you ever wish your iPhone's Apple logo would glow like the logo on your MacBook laptop? You could have the ultimate harmony of glowing Apple products.glowing apple iphone logo
Well, your wishes have come true. David Cogen from TheUnlockr.com, a smartphone how-to tutorial site, happens to sell a kit that lets you replace the shiny Apple logo on the back of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with a glowing logo. He also shows you exactly how to do it.
The kit for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are available for preorder.

Western Digital’s HGST releases helium-filled 10TB hard drive

Hard drive technology is developing leaps and bounds this decade and simultaneously the prices are also decreasing. Western Digital subdivision HGST is looking to take this forward and announced Ultrastar He10, a cutting-edge drive that’s filled with helium.Western Digital's HGST releases helium-filled 10TB hard drive
It is well known that HGST was working with helium for some time now. According to HGST, helium gas offers several advantages over traditional air-filled drives thanks to its lower density, with decreased power consumption and increased storage capacity.
HGST introduces a second, quicker 10TB helium-filled drive
Western Digital’s HGST division has released the world’s first helium-filled 10TB hard drive for everyday use costing about $900 (£600).
The Ultrastar He10 has two important features :
  1. It’s hermetically sealed and filled with helium,
  2. It has seven platters crammed into a standard-height 25.4mm (1-inch) hard drive.
Ultrastar He10 has seven perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) platters are packed into the standard 1-inch height of the drive. Earlier hard drives used a technique called shingled magnetic recording (SMR). The disadvantage of SMR is that it reduces the speed at which data can be accessed as it overlaps portions of data tracks to increase density.
Ultrastar He10 uses PMR in the more traditional way and hits sustained transfer speeds of up to 249 megabytes for second. HGST will release both an 8TB and a 10TB version of the new Ultrastar, with SATA 6Gbps or serial-attached SCSI interfaces being released.
It is surprising that the world leader in hard drive, Seagate has been lagging in helium based drives. Both HGST and Seagate are working on HAMR drives, though Seagate has been more vocal about it, saying that it could have some HAMR drives on the market in 2016. HGST, with shingled recording and seven platters at its disposal, should have no problem hitting 15 or 20TB over the next year—but its path towards larger online drives, using PMR or HAMR, is unclear.

Though Western Digital has not divulged price point at which Ultrastar He10 will sell, it is bound to make a hole in the user’s pocket. Given that its predecessor the He8 currently sells for around $550, the He10 is anticipated to launch at around $800 – $900.

Bill Gates And Mark Zuckeberg Join Hands To Change The World With Clean Energy Tech

Just before the United Nations climate talks in Paris, Bill Gates has announced the Breakthrough Energy Coalition. This is a joint act of more than 20 billionaires who have decided to invest in the clean energy innovation. In Bill Gates’ words: “We need clean-energy innovation and lots of it.”
bill-gates-mark-zuckerberg-clean-energy-
The Breakthrough Energy Coalition comprises of Bill Gates, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Alibaba chief Jack Ma, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, and others. These tech giants will work with the countries that are developing new technologies for zero-emission energy solutions.
Earlier this year, Bill Gates announced plans to invest about $1 billion in clean energy tech over the next 5 years. On his website, he mentioned that when we are willing to fight a global war, this investment will matter less.

Bill Gates and the tech leaders has also announced an initiative called Mission Innovation that involves commitment by 20 countries including USA, China, India, Japan, France, Brazil, and many others. The countries have pledged to double their investment in the clean energy research and development.
The group will consider early stage investment in the basic sectors like electricity generation, agriculture, transportation and energy system efficiency.
Stressing on the need of partnership with government, the coalition says that a transparent and workable structure will make things possible.
It should be noted that most venture capitalists are unwilling to invest in these transformative technologies that as they give returns after a longer period of time. This joint initiative also wishes to link the promising clean energy projects with investors who are ready to enter a long-time commitment.
